When Duke William heard of Harold's coronation and King Edward's death he was angry. When FitzOsbern asked him what was wrong William told him because everyone else knew.
William became duke when he was seven years old because his father died on a pilgrimage. After that he was sent from relative to relative until he was sixteen. He fled to the king of France because Normandy rebelled against him. After he conquered Normandy he waged wars in other countries. To keep his knights occupied he sent them to other countries to help as mercenaries to keep private wars from happening.
William soon realized he would need the church's support if he wanted to continue his rule. He appointed some foreigners and relatives as bishops in Normandy and guarded the church and supported it. When William's knights grew old they became monks. Without private wars the Norman economy was not disrupted.
